How come my lemon battery experiment won’t work?
I was doing the lemon battery experiment for my science fair project and I can’t seem to get my LED to light up. I used a multimeter to measure how many volts I had with 3 lemon and I had 3 volts, the light bulb still wouldn’t light up.
LED Light Bulb: 5mm Green LED. Min- 2.1 Volts Max- 2.8 Volts.
Copper Wire: 1mm x 7.6m (18 Gauge)
Several possibilities.
1. LED is in wrong polarity, as other answer mentioned.
2. LED is damaged
3. LED is lit, but very dim due to the low current capacity of the battery. Try cupping your hands around the LED
4. Voltage is not high enough. Although 3 volts should be enough, those type of batteries have limited current capability, and when you try to pull some current, the voltage drops quickly.
